What Is Geothermal Technology?

A geothermal system (also known as geo-exchange, or ground source heating & cooling) uses renewable energy from the earth to provide cottages with year round heating and cooling.

Geothermal systems are extremely energy-efficient, environmentally clean and safe and a cost effective way to heat and cool your cottage.

Geothermal can replace Natural Gas as your cottage primary heat source plus you get cheap air conditioning as a bonus!

Geothermal Eliminates The Need For

  • Natural gas building permit
  • Natural gas line from curb of property to foundation
  • Natural gas meter, natural gas line inside cottage & natural gas furnace
  • Monthly invoice for natural gas administration and distribution charges
  • Traditional air conditioning system.

"Alberta-Made"

CottageClub is an "Alberta-Made" recreational community and we believe in building Alberta’s future. We support Albertans by employing drilling crews and equipment used in Alberta’s oil patch to install our Geothermal systems. By working together with Alberta workers and supporting Alberta businesses, we’re creating a more resilient and more diversified economy for our future.

What Are The Benefits Of

Geothermal?

How It Works

Rather than burning gas, propane or oil, geothermal systems use the earth as a heat exchanger to provide year-round heating and cooling of virtually any type of building in any type of climate.

  • In the winter, the system extracts energy from the ground to provide heating.
  • In the summer, the system reverses and deposits heat from the house back into the ground to provide cooling.
  • The energy extracted from the ground is renewable, it comes from the sun. Almost 50% of the sun’s daily energy that hits our planet is absorbed by the ground.
  • Geothermal technology captures this energy to create a heating system using 80% less energy than conventional heating systems.
  • When the system is operating, it also produces free domestic hot water pre-heated.
  • The typical efficiency of this process is around 450%-500%. Electric heat by comparison is only 100% efficient, this is where the 80% electricity savings occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Geothermal?

A geothermal system (also known as geo-exchange, or ground source heating & cooling) uses renewable energy from the earth to provide cottages with year round heating and cooling. Geothermal systems are extremely energy-efficient, environmentally clean and safe, and a cost effective way to heat and cool your cottage.

Q: What are the benefits of Geothermal?

Geothermal can replace Natural Gas as your cottage primary heat source, plus you get cheap air conditioning as a bonus. Geothermal eliminates the need for a Natural Gas building permit, a natural gas line (from curb of property to foundation), natural gas meter, natural gas line inside the cottage, natural gas furnace, monthly invoice for natural gas administration and distribution charges, and a traditional air conditioning system.

Q: How energy-efficient are Geothermal systems?

Very! Approximately 80% of the energy needed to heat your cottage comes from the ground, with only 20% needed from the electrical grid to run the geothermal pumps and compressor. Geothermal systems achieve efficiencies of up to 500%. As a comparison, a 90% “high”- efficient gas burning furnace uses roughly 6 TIMES MORE energy to heat your cottage!

Q: How does CottageClub’s Geothermal support “Alberta-Made" solutions?

CottageClub is an “Alberta-Made" recreational community and we believe in building Alberta’s future. We support Albertans by employing drilling crews and equipment used in Alberta’s oil patch to install our Geothermal systems. By working together with Alberta workers and supporting Alberta businesses, we’re creating a more resilient and more diversified economy for our future. The mechanical equipment (heat pump unit) used in our cottages, while not “Alberta-Made”, is “Canadian-Made” in the Maritimes. These “Canadian-Made” heat pumps are ranked as one of the best in the world for quality and length of life cycle.

Q: How do Geothermal systems work?

Beneath the frost line (approximately 10ft deep in Alberta) the temperature of the earth remains relatively constant, regardless of the season. In Alberta, this temperature averages at around 6-8° Celsius. By circulating fluid through a set of pipes buried deep in the ground (commonly knows as the “ground loop”) the Geothermal system is able to extract energy from the ground in heating mode, and reject energy to the ground when cooling the cottage.

Q: What kind of maintenance is required?

Materials used in today’s Geothermal Systems have a very, very long life cycles with little to no maintenance required. In fact, Geothermal has been rated as the most reliable space conditioning system requiring the least amount of maintenance compared to any other heating or cooling system. Because the system operates without combustion, there is no risk of common furnace problems such as pilot-lights going out, gas-burners getting dirty, and more seriously Carbon Monoxide poisoning. All Geothermal components are either buried deep in the ground or sheltered inside the cottage which eliminates exposure from harsh elements. As with any mechanical equipment, it is smart to do an occasional service checkup.
