Practicing Mindfulness In Nature


Mindfulness - it's a trending topic that's gaining attention. But what is it? More importantly, how can the practice of mindfulness be helpful to our well being?  It's been called the new science of health and happiness. Mindfulness is said to improve our physical, emotional and for some even spiritual wellness.


On the physical health side, scientists have discovered that mindfulness techniques like meditating can help to alleviate stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties. When it comes to mental health, some psychotherapists use mindful meditation (and other techniques) to treat problems including: depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, conflicts and anxiety disorders. Many people who practice mindfulness report feeling less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deeper connections with others or spiritual beliefs. The idea is that practicing mindfulness makes it easier to enjoy the pleasures in life as they occur, helping you to more fully engaged in activities, and creating a greater capacity to deal with adverse events. By focusing on the here and now, mindfulness supports attitudes that can contribute to a more satisfied life.


There are many ways to achieve mindfulness, here is a simple technique to practice mindfulness in the beauty of natureFind a quiet spot in the great outdoors, sit upright in a relaxed position and empty your thoughts. You can focus on your natural breath or on a word or "mantra" that you repeat. Be open to the different sights, sounds, smells and textures that the outdoors provides. Let go of any worries, anxieties or stresses. Let yourself feel the wind on your face, hear a bird sing, notice the leaves rustle - and suddenly your engaged with nature. Afterwards, reflect on your experience, your feelings and emotions. This is an excellent technique for calming a troubled mind and engaging in a sensory experiences courtesy of mother nature.
