Three Helpful Hints To Buying The Perfect Cottage

There's something about being getting out of the city and being surrounded by majestic mountains, a sparkling lake, tall trees, clean air and natural beauty... a cottage home can be an ideal escape.

Financing

The first question to ask yourself is: what is my budget? Before you start shopping for a cottage, go to the bank and find out what you can afford. Perhaps you already have the resources necessary for the purchase, if so, move to the next step. If not, financial institutions offer several methods to pay for a cottage, such as increasing the mortgage on your city home or creating a second mortgage. Talking to a lender about getting pre-approved before the cottage-hunting process, will make it that much easier.

Location

Once you've determined what your budget is, decide upon a location you can afford and will enjoy. For most people the location is key, and has much to do with time and lifestyle needs. Do you want to be close to the city? If the answer is yes, look for properties within a reasonable commute to your city centre. If you are retired and have a more flexible schedule, other factors will drive your decision. Perhaps you want to be close to the mountains, or near a lake. Identify the factors that are important to you and your family, and make a wish list including both needs and wants. Most importantly, know where to draw the line.

The Cottage

Consider the structure of the house, the number of rooms you will need and how you will use them. Think about how much time are you going to spend there. Make sure you are able to enjoy your cottage in all seasons, so ask questions like:

  • Is the road to your cottage open and maintained year-round?
  • Does the cottage pump water from a lake or a well?
  • Can I rent my cottage if I choose to do so?
  • Can I build an accessory building for extra storage?
  • As a cottage owner what community amenities are available to me?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Owning a cottage is not always the same as owning a home. With financing in place, the perfect location chosen, all that will be left to do is to relax and enjoy your incredible surroundings and wonder... why you didn't make the move sooner!
