What's Pickleball You Say?

Pickleball is a racquet sport that is rapidly growing in popularity. It combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. Originating in 1965, the game was created by Joel Pritchard, who eventually went on to become Lieutenant Governor of Washington. He and two of his friends, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum were looking for a game their families could play. They attempted to set up badminton, but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a wiffle ball, lowered the badminton net, and made paddles of plywood. Some sources claim that the name "Pickleball" was derived from that of the Pritchard's family dog, Pickles, however, the name apparently came from the term "pickle boat", referring to the last boat to return with a catch.

Pickleball is easy to learn and setup, inexpensive to play and provides a vigorous workout. The pickleball court is similar to a doubles badminton court. The court is striped like a tennis court, with no alleys; but the outer courts, and not the inner courts, are divided in half by service lines. The ball is served with an underhand stroke so that contact with the ball is made below waist level in an upward arc. The server hits from behind the baseline on one side of the center line and aims diagonally to the opponent’s service zone and the game is on (*credits, Wikipedia)

There are many reasons for pickleball’s popularity in recent years. Here are three reasons why the sport is so popular according to USA Pickleball Association (**credits, sportsimports.com):

Pickleball is Ideal for All Skill Levels

Because pickleball rules are so similar to ping-pong, it can be easy for practically anyone to learn how to play the game. Whether you’re a beginner who just wants to learn a new sport for fun, or you’re a seasoned player who craves the thrill of more competitive play, pickleball offers something for everyone.

Pickleball is a Social Activity

Because a pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court (you can actually convert one tennis court into four pickleball courts), gameplay allows players to be close enough to one another that they can hold conversations. So, if you’re looking to bond with your family or have an outing with friends new or old, pickleball makes it easy to do just that while also giving you the ability to fit in a fun workout.

Playing Pickleball is Healthy

If you are looking for some great exercise for your mind and body, pickleball can’t be beat. Playing pickleball allows you to work on your balance, agility, reflexes, and hand-eye coordination without putting excessive strains on your body. Pickleball is a wonderful alternative for older players who used to play tennis, but have physical limitations such as hip, shoulder, knee, or other joint problems.

Ready to play?

Pickleball is a great way to have fun, get fit and challenge yourself at any skill level. Designed to the same standards and look of U.S. Open courts, the pickleball & tennis garden is set against the dramatic backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains and rejuvenating waters of Ghost Lake. It's the perfect game for those who enjoy getting some exercise while having tons of fun!
